Quick Tips for Family Caregivers

Posted on: April 10th, 2012 by LAMedicalBlogger

There are endless resources out there for the family caregiver.  Even on our blog alone, we’ve discussed this before and we’ll discuss it again because it is so important.  Your well being is just as important as the well being of the family member you are looking after.  Here are a few simple tips to keep you healthy while you keep others healthy:

  1. Everyone knows caregivers do a heavy lifting throughout the day.  Remember to be good to your back.  Wear a lumbar support if necessary.
  2. Part of caregiving is to promote independence for the loved one you are caring for.  Stay open to technology that allows your loved one to gain independence.
  3. Find support in others.  Other caregivers know what you’re going through and can help you find solutions to the problems you are dealing with.
  4. Let others help.  Other family and friends will offer to help and you should let then, but be specific in what actions would help you most.
  5. Learn as much as you can about your loved one’s condition.  This will help you discuss needs with other family members and your family doctor.
  6. Watch for signs of depression.  If you feel depressed, don’t hesitate to seek professional help before it gets worse.
  7. Your job is caregiving and you’ve earned some relaxing breaks.  Take a break and pamper yourself.
  8. Allow yourself to grieve for your losses and then dream new dreams.
  9. Stand up for yourself.
  10. Trust your instincts!
