Improving your Quality of Life: Insurance Awareness Day

Posted on: June 2nd, 2014 by LAMedicalBlogger

Reasons to have insurance

Insurance provides peace of mind, either for yourself or for a loved one.

At LA Medical, we know that life comes with unplanned accidents and illnesses. We believe it is best practice to always have some form of health insurance.

June 28, 2014 is Insurance Awareness Day, which exists as a reminder that things do go wrong and having insurance as a security blanket is always a good idea.

Life comes with so many “what ifs” that arrive at the worst of times and are usually uninvited issues. When you think of insurance: health, life, and auto all give you the peace of mind knowing your family is covered when something happens.

Having health insurance can help when it comes to improving your quality of life because being covered will help pay for costly hospital visits that have skyrocketed in recent years. Insurance Awareness Day is a part of improving your quality of life because knowing you are covered will give you time to enjoy other things in life instead of worrying about coverage.

There are several examples we came up with for reasons why you should be covered:

  1. The average cost of a three-day hospital visit is around $30,000, which would be out of pocket if you did not have insurance.
  2. For example, fixing a broken leg can cost up to $7,500!
  3. Uninsured people do not have as much access to preventive care as those who are insured.
  4. Emergency care assists those who are uninsured, but they do not have access to follow up care after they visit the emergency room.

Getting covered by insurance is the key to improving your quality of life and LA Medical wants you to know why you should be covered by health insurance at any age. Insurance Awareness Day is a great opportunity to bring up to loved ones that they should be covered by health insurance or any insurance for that matter.

Sun safety tips from LA Medical

Employ these sun safety tips to keep an eye on your skin health when at the beach!

June is National Cancer from the Sun Month and LA Medical wants to be sure you know best practices to avoid sun burns and skin cancer.

Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States and it affects over two million people each year. One in five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime. Because of these startling statistics, it is essential that you wear sunscreen, especially during the summer when the sun gives off stronger rays.

Since it is National Cancer from the Sun Month, LA Medical has compiled a list of tips for you to follow for sun safety at the beach, in the backyard, or anywhere you may encounter the sun.

  • Seek shade when possible between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. This is when the sun is most powerful and when sun burns are likely to occur.
  • Even one burn can increase your risk of skin cancer, so avoiding sun burns all together will lower your risk of getting melanoma or any other form of skin cancer.
  • Sunscreen is the top way to promote sun safety. Use sunscreen with an SPF (Sun Proof Factor) of 15 or higher each day. Wearing sunscreen everyday will ensure that you are protected from the sun’s rays. The higher the SPF the better, particularly for those who burn easily.
  • Self-examination of your skin is essential. Once a month take the time to look for irregular spots on your skin that seem out of the ordinary. If you are unsure about a spot on your skin, always contact the doctor. It is better to be safe than sorry!

LA Medical is concerned about the welfare of every part of you and skin health is essential to your wellbeing.  Summertime is a great chance to get outdoors, always do so with skin health and sun safety in mind.

These steps can help better the health of your skin and help to prevent all forms of skin cancer.

Men's Health Month Tips

Getting regular health check-ups can help you keep tabs on your health so you can be more active with your family.

June is a month that includes Men’s Health Week landing on June 9th-June 15th and Father’s Day follows. This month is a good time to bring up health with the men in your life. It is especially important to get yearly health screenings for a variety of health issues as men age.

There are some startling facts about men that LA Medical would like to bring to your attention and we believe that health screenings for a wide array of health issues is important to live a life of wellness.

  • Nearly 8% of men between the ages of 50-70 are to develop prostate cancer. Prostate cancer is the second leading cancer in men behind skin cancer. On a positive note, once this type of cancer is detected and stopped in the prostate, the likelihood of five year survival is almost 100%.
  • Heart Disease is the leading cause of death in men in the United States. Risk factors that add to the likelihood of heart disease include smoking and high blood pressure. To better aging men’s health, get regular cardiovascular screenings important in preventing heart disease.
  • Osteoporosis does not only affect older women, but also affects aging men’s health. As people age, calcium starts to leak from the bones causing weakness.  Those with a family history of the bone disease should especially be checked, but it is recommended for all after age 65.

Although LA Medical does not offer screenings, we encourage our customers to get checked for an assortment of health issues that affect men as age progresses. Not only are screenings important to the wellbeing of your life or the life of a loved one, exercise is also vital to aging men’s health.

LA Medical offers assistive products for walking and exercise. Remember to always make screenings and health a priority to lead a life of purpose.
