Tease Your Brain- Good Ways to Give It a “Workout”

Posted on: January 25th, 2015 by LAMedicalBlogger
Giving your brain some exercise each day helps prevent cognitive problems like Alzheimer's Disease.

Giving your brain some exercise each day helps prevent cognitive problems like Alzheimer’s Disease.

Throughout our entire life, we are generating new brain cells and new connections between them. Experts believe that the more mental reserves we build up, the better we can fight age-related cognitive decline. You form more pathways when you challenge your brain with things like brain teasers, puzzles and games. These are good ways to stimulate your brain and give it a “workout”.

Getting adequate sleep and exercise are also important to having a healthy brain. Studies show that just 30 minutes of brisk walking each day can improve blood flow to the brain. This causes more cells to grow and connect just like mental exercise does. The stress hormone cortisol depresses growth of cells and connections in the brain, having the opposite effect of brain stimulation.

LA Medical wants you to have a healthy brain so we found some brain teasers to give your noggin a workout!

  1. A man stands on one side of a river, his dog on the other. The man calls his dog, which immediately crosses the river without getting wet and without using a bridge or boat. How did the dog do it?
  2. In 1990, a person is 15 years old. In 1995, that same person is 10 years old. How can this be?

7 Ways to Boost Your Brain Power

Posted on: September 8th, 2014 by LAMedicalBlogger
Keep your mind and body healthy and working their best day in and day out!

Keep your mind healthy and working its best day in and day out!

It weighs approximately 3 pounds, is 85% water, and never shuts off. The brain is a fascinating organ that has been studied for years and never fully understood. Smarter than any computer or phone, our brains are capable of more than we can grasp.  Brain cells require 2 times more energy than any other cell in the human body, and they get this energy most effectively through water. While there will always be mysteries about the human body, scientists have uncovered an abundance of ways to boost your brain power that can be done daily. LA Medical would like to provide you with 7 activities that can be done every day to keep your mind sharp and functioning at its best.

  1. The brain and its countless functions depend on having an abundance of water available to work there best. Stay hydrated and your brain will be sure to stay sharp and thank you!
  2. Exercise benefits both the body and the brain. Physical activity increases oxygen and helps prevent memory loss. Find an activity you enjoy either outdoors or at the gym and do it regularly.
  3. Sleep is crucial for the brain to slow down, process information, and maintain its creativity and critical thinking. When the body is sleep deprived, many functions compromise and are unable to perform their best. Sleep assists in memory consolidation and allows the brain to enhance its memory during the deepest stages of sleep.
  4. Laughter is good for the brain because it engages many different regions. Spend time with happy and positive people and your brain will thank you.
  5. Avoid high stress, because it can kill brain cells and destroy the hippocampus over time, which is responsible for making new memories and remembering old ones. Find a stress management activity you enjoy to keep it under control and your brain working well.
  6. Eat for your brain and body to function and look their best. Omega-3 fatty acids have been proven to be beneficial for brain health. They are found in fish, walnuts, spinach, broccoli, soybeans, kidney beans, and others. Green tea, fruits and vegetable are all high in antioxidants that protect free radicals from damaging the brain.
  7. Keep your memory in check with new and frequent activities. Crossword puzzles, musical instruments, juggling, ping pong, or anything requiring the body and brain to work together, are great brain activities.
