One out of every ten Americans has had at least one migraine that was physiologically caused by food, stress, or hormone changes. No one has a concrete answer as to what causes headaches and while everyone is different, there are patterns of food culprits that contain triggers for headaches and migraines. The most important thing is that you find the specific triggers for you and try to avoid them. Save yourself a headache and exercise caution around these items:

Your morning coffee: Although coffee can help wake you up and has been proven to have positive effects, it can also bring a big headache to some people. It has a stimulant effect that can result in muscle tension, causing a headache.

Artificial sweeteners: Foods made with artificial sugars and preservatives trigger headaches in many people. Check your labels and avoid ingredients like aspartame or words you can’t pronounce.

Last night’s leftovers: To avoid a headache, try to eat foods as fresh as possible. Tyramine levels increase in foods that are aged, fermented, or stored for long periods of time. Make sure you don’t eat leftovers from the fridge if they are more than three or four days old.

Dehydration: Simply put, your body needs water. Women should be getting eight glasses of water each day while men need about 10 glasses.  Drinking more water will hydrate your skin, reduce your risk of cancer, help fight infection and raise your energy levels.

Not eating often enough: Your body may react to a missed meal by giving you a headache. Aim to eat three meals each day with appropriate and healthy snacking in between. Be mindful of proportions, though, as eating too much at once can also be a headache trigger.

Eating a well-balanced diet and drinking plenty of water will help prevent a host of illnesses, including headaches. LA Medical Retail’s goal is to keep you and your loved ones happy and healthy. Please contact us with any questions you have!
