These “superfoods” can help you look and feel healthier!

While popping a multivitamin each day might be beneficial and worthwhile, it is a lot more fun to eat real food! You can get most, if not all, of your essential nutrients by selecting the right combination of foods. It is all about which ones you choose!

The list of “superfoods” is always growing, but we want to highlight a few different items that can boost your immunity, decrease inflammation, build muscle and fight off disease. Try to work the following foods into your diet:

Dried plums: Dried plums, also called prunes, are rich in copper and boron, both of which can help prevent osteoporosis. Try four or five a day to increase your bone strength and boost your energy.

Spinach: Usually known as a muscle building, spinach is also rich in vitamin K, making it a bone builder. Spinach is also high in calcium, phosphorus, potassium and zinc.

Blueberries: Blueberries are a small, but mighty, immunity booster. They can help prevent diseases from cancer to heart disease. Just one serving of blueberries contains more antioxidants than any other fruit.

Chocolate milk: Research shows that the calcium and vitamin D in chocolate milk helps preserve cartilage and joint health. Drinking one large glass after you work out will boost your muscle growth and speed up recovery.

Olive oil: Extra-virgin olive oil is rich in monounsaturated fats, which can reduce inflammation in cells and joints.

Almonds: Another tasty inflammation fighter is almonds. This energy-rich snack helps lower bad cholesterol and can lower blood sugar in those with diabetes. Be sure to keep the skins on – they are full of antioxidants!

Pineapple: Pineapples have a mix of vitamins, antioxidants and enzymes that benefits the entire body. They can protect against colon cancer, arthritis and macular degeneration. Dish up half a cup, two or three times a week!

In recent years, scientists have pinpointed certain foods as “super foods”. In addition to stimulating overall health, these foods are great for kidney health as well. Many super foods contain antioxidants and other health-promoting properties that are good for your kidneys. While super foods are good for everyone, the following items have been shown to have a positive effect on kidney health:

Red bell peppers are low in potassium and are packed with vitamins A, C, B6, folic acid and fiber. Red bell peppers can be mixed into salads or used to top sandwiches.

Garlic may not smell so good, but it has been shown to reduce inflammation and lower cholesterol. Use garlic powder to add extra flavor to your meals without adding extra sodium.

Apples are high in fiber and anti-inflammatory properties. They also help reduce cholesterol, prevent constipation, protect against heart disease, and decrease your risk of cancer.

Blueberries get their blue color from antioxidant compounds and contain lots of vitamin C and fiber. Like most berries, they are delicious on cereal or in smoothies.

Egg whites are pure protein along with all of the essential amino acids. Use them for omelets or egg white sandwiches.

Olive oil contains an anti-inflammatory fatty acid as well as antioxidant compounds that prevent inflammation. It can be used in cooking or to make salad dressing.

Red grapes get their color from several flavonoids which help prevent blood clots and inflammation. Grapes make a tasty snack or can be added to fruit or chicken salad.

March is National Kidney Month and LA Medical urges you to give your kidneys a thought and a check up to make sure that they are working properly.
